What are the origins of the words "gobo" and "glass gobo"?

Gobo is a word taken from stage productions. It was originally a simple template usually made of lead which was put in front of a spotlight to give its beam a particular form on the stage. Derksen Lichttechnik GmbH have evolved this idea and created a modern, high quality product of coated glass gobos which are manufactured with the help of a laser.

How do I order a duplicate of a gobo which has already been made?

When you enquire or order and state therein that you require a duplicate you'll only be charged the lesser duplicate price. Gobo data is stored for 5 years so whenever possible include the archive number of the required gobo and that'll make the search that much quicker and easier.

Can slides or transparencies be projected?

Not for any great length of time because the projector emits a lot of heat and some radiation which quickly cause irreparable damage to slides and transparencies.

Which light is best for projections?

In this case darkness is our friend. Daylight and sunlight are disruptable influences. Too make light visible in light is comparable to trying to see white drops in a white colour. You need contrast. Shadow, dark areas or cloudy skies provide some clarity for images but the clearest are achieved in total darkness and these can be projected over far greater distances.

Which qualities should a back-drop have?

The best back-drop is a white one because it reflects the light better. But light coloured surfaces, pink, yellow, light blues and greens etc. are also passable alternatives. Mirrors and stainless steel surfaces should be avoided because they reflect the whole of the light. Goods on display in cases, on shelves or in shop windows can also make good surfaces to use.

How are Derksen gobos manufactured?

Derksen make glass gobos with the aid of digital templates and a high intensity three laser system. The data is transferred and etched onto specially coated heat resistant glass. Coloured glass gobos consist of several layers of dichroic coloured filters each one of which has been separately worked on by the laser before the multi layered gobo can be fitted together. An advantage of this method is that every copy of data is exactly reproduced with exceptional precise quality.

How many different colours can a gobo have?

A multicoloured glass gobo can be made up of a million different colour tones. The colours are formed through a screened representation of the four basic colours cyan, magenta, yellow and black. (Similar to an off-set print.) Glass gobos which don't need scanning consist of the three main colours plus white. (Category 3)

What's the difference between gobo size and image size?

The gobo size is the diameter of the actual gobo whilst the image size is the diameter of the image to be projected. The image size is logically smaller than the gobo size and the area of the gobo which can't be projected is known as the edge.

Which gobo capabilities do Derksen projection systems have?

GoboTop and BIL – Brand Image Lamp:
diameter 37.5 mm, image size 20 mm
